Magpie.chat — TestFlight Beta Guide

Version: 1.0.0 (Build 3) · March 2026

What is Magpie.chat?

Magpie.chat is a real-time conversation insight assistant. It quietly listens while you talk and turns your perspectives, data points, and inspirations into beautiful visual cards in real time.

You just focus on having interesting conversations; Magpie.chat handles capturing the "good stuff" you say.

1. How to Install

Method A: Via TestFlight Invite Link

  1. Ensure TestFlight is installed on your iPhone/iPad (Free on the App Store).
  2. Open the TestFlight invite link we sent you.
  3. Tap "Install" in TestFlight.
  4. Once installed, the Magpie icon will appear on your home screen.

Method B: Via TestFlight App

  1. Open the TestFlight App.
  2. If you've been added as a tester, Magpie will appear in your list of available tests.
  3. Tap "Install".

Note: TestFlight builds display an orange dot next to the app name, indicating it's a beta version. This is completely normal.

2. Quick Start Guide

Step 1: Grant Microphone Access

On your first launch, Magpie will request Microphone access. This is a core feature and must be allowed.

All audio processing for Magpie happens locally on your device; your recordings are never uploaded.

Step 2: Start a Session

  1. Open Magpie.chat, and you will enter the Live HUD (real-time conversation panel).
  2. Tap the Microphone button at the bottom to start recording.
  3. Talk normally — chat with a friend, think out loud, or discuss a specific topic.

Step 3: Watch Cards Appear

When Magpie.chat detects valuable content, three types of cards will surface on screen:

Card TypeIcon ColorContent
ANCHORBlueKey quotes, crucial data points
INTELPurpleBackground knowledge, statistics
SPARKOrangeConversation prompts, extended questions

Cards first appear as skeleton placeholders (gray shimmering blocks) and automatically fill in once the content is loaded.

Step 4: End Session & Review

  1. Tap the Stop button at the bottom to end the recording.
  2. You will automatically enter the Session Summary page.
  3. Here you can:
    • Swipe left/right to browse all generated cards.
    • Share Summary to share your session highlights.
    • Save to Library to store locally.

3. Help Us Improve

At the bottom of the Session Summary page after every session, you will see a button:

💬 Help improve Magpie.chat

What does it do?

When tapped, Magpie.chat exports the complete session log (.jsonl format) of that session via the iOS Share Sheet.

This log contains:

  • Text snippets transcribed from your speech.
  • Magpie.chat's predictive judgments and generated card content.
  • Timelines and event sequences.

How to send it to us?

  1. Tap "Help improve Magpie.chat" at the bottom of the Session Summary page.
  2. When the Share Sheet appears, choose any of the following:
    • AirDrop — If a developer is nearby.
    • Mail — Send to [email protected].
    • iMessage / Telegram — Send directly to the developers.
    • Save to Files — Save first, send later.
  3. Done!

Why is this important?

  • Even if a session didn't produce any cards, the log is still incredibly valuable.
  • It helps us understand which conversation scenarios Magpie.chat cannot yet cover.
  • Every log you share directly helps Magpie.chat get smarter.

FAQ

Q: Are my recordings uploaded?
A: No. Audio processing (Voice Activity Detection + transcription) is done entirely locally on-device. Logs only leave the device if you manually tap "Help improve Magpie.chat" and share them.

Q: Why do cards sometimes not appear?
A: Magpie.chat's prediction engine determines if valuable insights are present in the conversation. Brief small talk or noise may not trigger cards. Try discussing more in-depth topics.

Q: Can I use it in noisy environments?
A: Yes, but quieter environments yield better results. Magpie.chat has built-in Voice Activity Detection (VAD) that automatically filters out silence and background noise.

Q: Will the TestFlight version update automatically?
A: Yes. TestFlight will notify you when we release new beta versions. You can also manually check for updates in the TestFlight App.
